Minnesota Math Corps combines the people power of AmeriCorps members with the science of learning. Trained AmeriCorps members are placed in elementary, middle, and junior high schools statewide to serve as math tutors for students in grades 4-8. Tutors work consistently with students in pairs, providing math support that’s tailored to each learner’s needs.
And it works. A randomized controlled trial completed in the 2016-17 school year found that students who received Math Corps interventions made significantly larger gains than their peers who did not participate. At the end of the study, Math Corps students were 2-3 months ahead of their expected trajectory.
Minnesota Math Corps launched in 2008. Since then, the program has expanded to help 20,000 students get on track to succeed in math.
